Oracle bone inscriptions showed that in Shang Dynasty criminal punishment of cutting of the nose existed, which also was recorded in Shangshu in the late primitive society.A neolithic pottery sculpture of head without nose is collected by Xi'an Jiaotong University Museum. The analysis of anatomy and different nose damage reasons revealed that the head is most likely a scupture with Yi punishment. The sculpture, the Chinese ancient documents about“Xiang Punishment”and the late Yangshao culture corporal punishment corroborated one another. The pottery is an important material for the study of corporal punishment in the late primitive society.
