This year is the centennial of the discovery of the oracle bone from the Yin Ruins. Toacknowledge the glorious tradition of oracle rite in China's history, the author of this arti-cle probes its mysterious origin. The hitherto earliest oracle turtle-shells came from the Peiligang culture, Hongshanculture, Longgangsi culture at Nanzheng in Shaanxi and Dawenkou culture in Shan-dong. Since turtle lives in water, it was called 'mother of water,' which reminds us of theIndian reference to the turtle as prajapati (mother of earth) or liquid of earth.
