The Influence of Learner Factors on Chinese Students′ Reading Proficiency in English

摘要 本文利用在香港进行的一项大型国际阅读能力调查研究的资料,在相关分析的基础上,探讨了以汉语为母语的学生,在他们英语阅读能力的形成和发展过程中,各种学生个人、家庭以及英语阅读习惯和学习方法等因素,对他们英语阅读能力的影响。研究结果表明,某些因素对初级和中级阶段学生的英语阅读能力有着共同的影响,而另一些则对某一阶段的英语学习有较大的影响。 Based on statistical analysis of a large-scale survey conducted in Hong Kong, this paper tries to establish the relationship between a wide range of learner factors and Chinese learners′ reading proficiency in English. The research instruments designed for the study include two sets of English reading tests and questionnaires for students in Primary 4 and Secondary 3. The tests at each level cover three types of texts, namely, narrative, expository and documentary. The learner factors investigated in the questionnaires include personal characteristics and home background, general English reading activities, school and homework related to English reading, and students′ attitudes to and opportunities for English reading outside school. It is found that the factors affecting students′ English reading ability at both levels include students′ self-rating in English reading ability, number of English books at home, frequency of borrowing English books from the school library, home possessions score, and frequency of reading English documentary texts. For Primary 4 students, sex, frequency of reading English texts or doing English reading exercises in class, and frequency of reading English books for fun and reading English books to someone at home are also important factors. Girls in Primary 4 are clearly superior in handling all the three types of texts; but by Secondary 3, boys equal and surpass girls in dealing with expository and documentary texts. The strongest correlation found in the study is that between Secondary 3 students′ achievement in English reading literacy achievement and their expectations about the number of years of formal education they plan to complete. Watching more English TV programs or videos shows a positive effect on Secondary 3 students′ English reading proficiency, but has no clear effect on that of Primary 4 students.
