AbstractThe present paper is a corpus based study of two sub groups of copular verbs, i.e. the verbs of ‘remaining’ and the verbs of ‘becoming’, on the basis of the Nuclear v. Non nuclear Hypothesis proposed by R.M.W. Dixon. One of the important points that has been unravelled in the study is that nuclear copular verbs have all the syntactic and semantic properties of non nuclear copular verbs and that their collocability range embraces that of the latter, but the reverse does not apply. The study thus lends support to the hypothesis that nuclear/non nuclear distinction does hold in natural languages, such as English.
