Abstract What is a word remains an unsolved problem, theoretically and practically.Grammarians and lexicographers, familiar with Classic Chinese and ideographic characters, stick to a principle of decomposing polysyllabic combinations of characters into independent words whenever possible. As a result, the total number of words in common use in Modern Chinese amounts only to a little more than 20,000,incredibly far less than the average number of other cultured languages. However, recent investigations among people of different strata in Wuhan and Beijing show the popular intuition of word differs greatly from the practice of specialists.Nonspecialists are inclined to take most disyllabic and trisyllabic forms as words.Their opinions coincide precisely with Prof.L Shuxiang's proposal of a practical treatment of these combinations as words, and is quite worthy of being tried out in practice.
