摘要
一、语言系统、语言使用、语言教学研究语言有必要把语言系统和语言使用这两个概念区别开来:语言系统是一个抽象的规则系统,听不见、看不到;而语言使用却是一种可以捉摸到的行为,一个执行过程。最早把语言系统和语言使用区分开来的是Saussure,他把前者称为语言,后者称言语。后来Chomsky又分称为语言能力和语言运用,最近则区别为内部语言与外部语言,目的是强调行为中的心智状态。
Language in use is distinct from the linguistic system itself in that it is(1)symbolic,(2)creative,
(3)contextual,(4)diverse,(5)strategic,(6)probabilistic and(7)temporal in nature.
Language in use can be studied either by qualitative or descriptive research procedure.Both deal
with naturally occurring phenomena,but qualitative research is hypothesis-generating because its con-
clusions are arrived at as a result of considering only the data and the possible patterns which can be in-
ferred inductively from the data,whereas descriptive research is often deductive and begins with precon-
ceived hypotheses and a narrower scope of investigation.Qualitative research has become more and more
popular in the study of language in use,but it is still a neglected area in China.
