摘要
历时三百年的中国礼仪之争破坏了17－18世纪中西方文化交流的大好局面．本文依据旧金山大学1992年10月召开的中国礼仪之争国际研讨会整理的罗马教廷有关中国礼仪之争的主要文件一百篇，探讨发生这场大争论的深层原因：罗马教廷以“文化至尊”自居来禁止中华民族传统文化几千年的维系纽带，必然会发生激烈的文化碰撞，这是中西方文化交流史上的一个惨痛教训，不同质的多元文化间的对话必须在平等的基础上进行，“文化至尊”的观念是万万不可取的。
An argument centered upon Chinese rites lasting for 300 years damaged the felicitous situation of Chinese-Western cultural exchange during the 17 and 18 centuries. Based on the 100 documents presented in the International Symposium on Chinese rites held inoctober 1992 in San Francisco University, this article seeks the in-depth cause: RomanCatholic Church's 'Cultural Arrogance' vs. traditional Chinese ritualistic ties lasting forseveral thousand years. As a result,it surely gave rise to fierce cultural collision' This is abitter lesson in the history of Chinese-Western cultural exchange- A dialogue betweenqualitatively different and pluralistic cultures must be carried out on an equal footing-'Cultural Arrogance' must be done away with.
