AbstractFormal treatment of linguistic studies has become a trend in the fields of modern linguistics.It is the natural and necessary outcome of the dawning of the information era.With the strong demand for intelligent information processing systems,machines have almost become the sole beneficiary of most of the linguistic research,which can only benefit from results that are described with sufficient formalism.For linguists with few formal training who are engaged in traditionally less formalized fields such as pragmatics,formal treatment of their research are still possible.This paper attempts to show 1.that formalization started in the field of pragmatics decades ago,and is developing today;and 2.that formal treatment is within reach of many linguists.The paper supports the claim by presenting a computer simulation of the well known speech act rules proposed by Searl.
