A good argument can be made for necessities for writings, whether poetic or scientific, to utilize metaphor which, as a rhetorical device, has always been cherished by literary writers but abandoned by scientists. Based on linguistic and semantic theories, this paper disusses the metaphorical roles in scientific English through analyzing pro and con attitudes towards scientific metaphor. With examples illustrating linguistic characteristics and forms of metaphor in scientific writing, the author suggests that judicious use rather than over-use of metaphor is an essential language device in science writing.
