Serum lipid peroxide(LPO) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and plasma endothelin (ET) value were determined in 18 patients with coronary heart disease(CHD),17 patients with diabetes mellitus,16 diabetic patients with CHD, and 20 control subjects. There existed history of myocardial infarction in groups of patients with CHD and diabetic patients with CHD. The LPO level,LPO/SOD ratio and plasma ET value were significantly higher in the patients with CHD and the patients with diabetes mellitus than those in the control subjects. The increases of the biochemical parameters mentioned above were more pronounced in the diabetics with CHD than in the other two groups of patients, There was significant correlation between LPO/SOD ratio and ET value in all the groups of patients and control subjects. Our results suggest that the interplay between ET and lipid peroxidation might play an important role in the development and exacerbation of CHD in diabetics.
