Theories of translation always seek to establish a methodology that is universally applicable to translation, thus ignoring the translator as an individual with a subjective being and possessing the power of creativity. This means that ontological issues are insufficiently explored in translation theories. In other words, there is a lack of philosophical recognition of the being, the position and the function of the human agent in intracultural and intercultural translation. This paper puts forward the view that one way of redressing the situation is to combine the Heideggerian phenomenology with the theory of 'nothing-in-between' (不隔, buge) put forward by Qian Zhongshu, a great translation scholar of 20th century China.
