The paper is consisted of four parts as follows. It starts, in its first part, with a brief analysis of the linguistic features of the two English versions of Hongloumeng — A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yan, and The Story of the Stone by David Hawkes and John Minford. The second part is devoted to the differences between China and West on the nature of translation and argumentation against the viewpoint which attributes such factors as translation purpose, type of text and readership of target language text to the linguistic difference of the two versions illustrated in the first part. Then, in the third part, an in-depth cause analysis is made of different viewpoints related to the nature of translation from the perspective of the cultural environments in China and the West. And, finally, the fourth part of the article discusses the different routes adopted by the traditional Chinese Translation Studies and Western Translation Studies in terms of mode of thinking.
