摘要
本文主要研究西部落后是否存在人口原因和西部开发是否存在人口问题。指出，人口不是西部落后的原因，在西部开发过程中也不是重要决定因素，但西部开发会面临人口问题，为了使西部地区社会经济持续健康发展，强调西部开发与人口的数量控制和素质提高必须有机结合。
In this essay, the author approaches the subjects on the relation between population and economic growth in development of the West of China and points out that population is neither the source of backwardness nor the determining factor in development of the West of China, and stresses on essentiality of the organic joint between controlling quantity and improving quality for realizing sustainable development of society and economy in the west of China. Chen Yiping, born in 1964, is associate professor of Institute of Sociology and Demography at Guangdong Provincial Academy of Social Sciences.
