The origin and function of the blockhouse has long been studied, and there mainly exist two schools of arguments. One dominant school argues that it is war that leads to the building of blockhouses because they are military fortification for defensive firing or observation, while the other school tries to combine religious belief and ancient functionalism with the explanation of defense by arguing it is the combination of war and religion that produces the aesthetic meaning of blockhouse. This article attempts to develop the idea that was almost hidden in history. It holds that the origin of blockhouses is not war, neither is it the need for protection or aesthetics, but is out of the cultural symbolic system among the local ethnic groups of people, the result of which represents the interaction of their world view and the concrete historical locations. The blockhouse is a means of the local people to imagine the world.
