Constructed wetland is often employed for treating various wastewaters because of its many advantages: low overall cost, high effieieneies for pollutant removal, simple operation and stable performance. Macrophytes in such constructed wetlands perform many ecological functions, including assimilating and storing nutrient elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus, transporting O2 to the root zone, providing substrates for microbes, enhancing and maintaining hydraulic conductivity. These functions are responsible for the enhanced removal of organic matter, nutrient and toxic substance in the wetland populated with desirable macrophytes. Establishing the most effective plant community, physiology of macrophytes, effects of macrophytes on oxygen production and transport, and interactions between the plants and microorganisms in the wetland were identified as the areas that need additional research.
