The Southern Xiongnu tombs of the mid and late Eastern Han period discovered so far in China are distributed mainly in the northern and northwestern borderland of the Han period. As the Southern Xiongnu was highly Sinicized, their tombs were similar to contemporary Han-style burials in form and grave goods, though they maintained some features of their own mortuary custom, which are reflected from their burying animal victims with the deceased, wavy pattern pottery, animal design belt-ornaments, bronze and iron weapons, ornaments of different materials, and jade, stone and bone artifacts. The formation of tiny discrepancies among the Southern Xiongnu tombs in burial custom, i.e. the type and form of grave goods, were due to various factors, including differences in ethnic composition, geographical and environmental conditions, the degree of sinicization, and the date of burial.
