To explore blood levels of antioxidant system in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD)and its possible role in the pathogenesis of PD, plasma levels of vitamin E and vitamin C (P-VE, P-VC) and erythrocyte levels of superoxide dismutase (P-SOD, E-SOD) and lipoperox-ides (P-LPO, E-LPO) were measured in 70 PD patients, using 70 healthy volunteers as thecontrol group- The results showed that, levels of P-VE and P-VC as well as activity of P-SOD and E-SOD l0wered significantly as compared with the normal controls, while the con-tents of P-LPO and E-LPO were increased. ln addition, P-VE, P-VC and E-SOD levelswere inversely correlated with severity and duration of the disease. The results suggestedthat PD patients might have defects in antioxidant system, which could cause the accumula-tion of endogenous free radical and the degeneration of nigra neurons in the substantia nigra.
