The static adsorption of cationic polysaccharide, or quartenary ammonium salt of polysaccharide, MM-1 on deoiled reservoir sands of 0. 175-0.246 mm in diameter from aqueous solution is investigated and it is shown that the isotherms of adsorption fit to Langrnuir's equation; the experimental temperature has minor influence on the adsorption and the adsorption amount at 25℃ is slightly larger than that at 60℃ ; the saturation adsorption of MM-1 is much larger than that of HPAM polymers, being of 1592.1 and 1513.6/zg/g sands at 25℃ and 60℃, respectively. The adsorption of MM-1 on sands reaches a maximum at pH = 7.0 and increases continueously and finally approaches to an equilibrium value with increasing amout of Na2SO4 added (≤4%) or substitution degree (SD) by cationic functionalities (≤0.40). The reasons for these experimental phenomena are discussed. The zeta potential of the reservoir sands with MM-1 adsorbed from aqueous solution at 60℃ is measured in distilled water and is shown to increase with increasing SD in range 0.05-0.40 from negative to positive values and to go through zero point at SD≈0. 125. The interactions of MM-1 in aqueous solution with crude oil and oily sands are exothermic and the heat of interaction increases with increasing MM-1 concentration, reaches a peak value at concentration 1.0 g/L (with crude oil) and 10 g/L (with oily sand) and then becomes constant.
