Objective To investigate the gonad toxicity of exhaust gas from cars using lead- free gasoline and the influences on trace elements in rats. Methods Thirty male SD rats were randomly divided into the experiment group (n= 15) and the control group (n= 15). The rats in the experiment group were administrated by oral gavage with the absorbent solution containing car exhaust at a dose of 0.1 ml/L only once a day; and the rats in the control group were administrated by oral gavage with placebo absorbent solution. The changes in body weight, spermatogenesis and contents of trace elements were examined in testes after oral gavage for 4, 6 and 8 w. Results The ratios of gonads to body weight in the rats of experiment group were lower than those in the control group (P〈 0.05) and fewer alive sperms and more malformed or dead sperms were found in the epididymis of rats exposed to car exhaust for 6 and 8. The content of Zn in the testis was significantly decreased but that of Mn significantly increased in the rats exposed to car exhaust for longer period, and a time - effect relationship was demonstrated. Conclusions Exhaust gas from cars using lead- free gasoline significantly induces toxicity in male rat gonads, and the imbalance of Zn and Mn might be contributive to the damage of testis.
