Mao Zedong publicly answered the question'whether Lu Xun would have dared to write if he had lived'three times as early as the time when the National Publicity Working Confer- ence was held before the rectification movement started,so it stood to reason that he answered this question once again during the Anti - Rightist Campaign later. As far as the three editions of'Mao - Luo Dialogue'in circulation now are concerned, the characters'gu quan da ju (taking the inter- ests of the whole into consideration)'in He Shengrno's edition are very important for they most apt- ly embody Mao Zedong's profound understanding of Lu Xun's essays and his ardent expectation of the intellectuals' political attitude. In his view,'everything has its principle and flexibility'.The es- says in Lu Xun's style are always needed, but they must be written keeping to the stand of the peo- ple and for protecting and educating them-this is the principle;but when the wrong opinion ap- peared in the society that negated the Party and socialism and changed the rectification movement to the Anti-Rightist Campaign, essays like those written at the start of open-door rectification to satirize our own ranks were no longer appropriate;then we should take the whole situation of anti - Rightist struggle into consideration and change the objects of satire and criticism-this is the flexi- bility. This way of thinking embodies the organic combination of Marxist tenet of policy and strate- gy with the traditional Chinese thinking of principle and flexibility.
