摘要
约翰.斯坦贝克是一位倍受争议的美国作家。虽然获得了诺贝尔文学奖,评论界对他赞扬的声音却依然停留在其30年代的前期作品中,而对其后期作品褒贬不一。本文通过分析斯坦贝克两部后期作品《罐头厂街》和《伊甸园之东》中的中国文化和中国人李忠和李的形象,比较了斯坦贝克笔下的这两个典型华裔形象的不同,体现了斯坦贝克接受中国人,尊重中国人思想的态度的转变以及他敢于正面塑造华人的勇气。
A close analysis of Steinbeck's portrayal of two Chinese characters in Cannery Row and East of Eden shows his acceptance of,and positive attitude toward,the Chinese immigrants and their native culture.Given the historical circumstances under which he wrote,it took much courage for Steinbeck to offer the kind of sympathetic representation.
