AIM: To investigate the effect of missing molars on spatial learning and memory in mice and explore its mechanism. METHODS: 100 healthy and adult mice were randomly divided into the following five groups, of which 1,3 and 6 molars were missing in three groups respectively, while no molars were missing in the anesthetic and control groups. The ability of spatial leaming and memory of these mice was tested with the Morris water maze 1 week after anesthesia and operation of tooth extraction. The experiment lasted for six weeks with once per week. RESULTS : During the six weeks for behavior tests, the performances of spatial learning and memory were significantly improved at 5 and 6 weeks in comparing with that in previous four weeks ( P 〈 0.05 ). The latent period for targeting the platform for mice in the group of 6 molars missing was obviously longer than other groups ( P 〈 0.05 ), while there was no conspicuous difference among other groups. No gender difference was observed. CONCLUSION: A relatively large number of missing molars will cause a certain effects on the ability of spatial learning and memory of the mice, while no effect could be seen on the mice missed fewer molars.
