Objective To evaluate the effect of preoprative anticholinergic agents on the catheter-related bladder discomfort after general anaesthesia. Methods Three hundred male adult patients undergoing selective surgery were randomized into three groups with 100 cases each. Group A received atropine 0.01 mg/kg and group P received penehyclidine 0. 01 mg/kg im. 30 min before surgery. Group C was given no anticholinergic agents as the control. After anaesthesia induction, all patients were catheterized with a 12 Fr Foley' s catheter and the balloon was inflated with 8 ml distilled water. The bladder discomfort was assessed during recovery in the post-anaesthesia care unit. Severity of bladder discomfort was graded as mild, moderate and severe. Results Lower incidence of moderate and severe bladder discomfort was observed in group P compared with group A and group C (P〈0. 01) . Conclusion Preoprative penehyclidine 0. 01 mg/kg is effective in reducing the severity of the catheter-related bladder discomfort after general anaesthesia.
