ObjeetiveTo investigate the prevalence of lower ankle brachial index (ABI) and association between lower ABI and traditional cardiovascular risk factors among middle-old aged people. Methods This study was performed through cross-sectional survey. 1040 middle-old aged cases were enrolled from March 2008 to November 2009 consecutively. ABI was measured and data were analyzed to investigate the prevalence of lower ABI both in men and women, and to identify the risk factors. Results 1040 cases were enrolled (620 men and 420 women ranging from 40 to 89 years old). The total prevalence of lower ABI was 13%, men were 11% and women were 16.4 %. Lower ABI was positively correlated with age, gender, TG, LDL, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and tobacco consuming. Conclusion The ABI test is simple, accurate and reliable, and it can be considered as a routine screening criterion in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
