Objective: To observe the effect of edaravone on serum level of neuron specific enolase(NSE) and S-100β protein(S-100β) in patients with acute severe brain injury. Methods: Seventy-two patients with acute severe brain injury were randomly divided into treatment group(36 cases) and control group(36 cases),two groups were both given with conventional treatment, while the treatment group was also given with extra injection of edaravone for 14 d.Serum NSE and S-100β were measured before and 1,4,7 days after the treatment respectively.Besides, changes of Glasgow coma scale(GCS) score and Glasgow Outcome Scale(GOS) 3 months after the injury were observed and compared between the 2 groups. Results: The GCS score of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the treatment group 14 days after the treatment(P〈0.001).3 months after injury, good outcomes were shown in 55.5% patients of the treatment group, significant higher than the 27.8% of the control group(P〈0.05).The decrease of serum levels of NSE and S-100β in treatment group was significant higher than that of the control after 4 d or 7 days of treatment(P〈0.001).Conclusion: Edaravone can reduce the serum levels of NSE and S-100β in patients with acute severe brain injury and improve the prognosis.
