Objective To study the potential differences in average pure vowel formants between profoundly hearing-impaired children and normal-hearing children and to provide guidance for speech rehabilitation training for hearing-impaired children. Methods The voice samples were obtained from ten profoundly hearing-impaired children of 3-6 years old as they pronounced /a/, /o/, /e/, /i/, /u/ and /0/ naturally with each sound lasting over 3 seconds. The 3 s stable stage was obtained from each sound sample for acoustic parameter analysis. These data were compared with those of normal-hearing children. Results The three formants of 6 vowels by the hearing-impaired children were compared with those of normal-hearing children and no significant difference was found in F1 of all the vowels(P〉0.05). No significant difference in F2 of/o/and /u/(P〉O.O5)was noted, but significant differences in that of other vowels(P〈0.05) observed. The significant differences were also observed in F3 of all the vowels (P〈0.05) between hearing-impaired and normal-hearing group (P〈0.05). Conclusion There are significant differences in pure vowel formants between hearing-impaired and normal-hearing children, which may be one of the reasons why profoundly hearing-impaired children can't pronounce the vowels clearly.
