International migration has been a much-studied topic in social sciences. Based on a literature review of classical and contemporary theories of international migration and research on migrant remittances, the paper focu- ses on examining how transnationalism impacts the development in sending and receiving societies. The Authors suggest that immigrant transnationalism not only promotes the development in migrant families, local communities, and larger regions in sending countries, but also has significant varied effects on immigrant/ethnic communities in receiving countries. They argue that how and how much international migration influences social development de- pend on local circumstances and institutional contexts of the sending country, the scale and strength of the ethnic community in the receiving country, the kind of resources immigrants and their community can mobilize, and the social status of the immigrant group in the receiving society. The paper concludes by raising a number of urgent questions from the macro, meso, and micro perspectives for future research.
