Zhenlai County, in Northeast China＇s Jilin Province, has offered greater assistance to vulnerable women and children in recent years. County officials hope the assistance will help recipients solve difficulties in their lives, and subsequently enhance their personal development The county government has done the following to assist single, poverty-stricken mothers： Improving Women, Children＇s BenefitsOffered the women professional training. For example, the government has offered （free of charge in two handiwork bases） courses in Suzhou （in East China＇s Jiangsu Province） embroidery and wickerwork to 200 single, poverty-stricken mothers. As a result, 97 percent of the women have found work making crafts, either at the bases or in their homes. Those women have been earning, on average, 2,000 yuan （US $317） a month.
