摘要
北海港是近代中国大陆海岸最南端的通商口岸,自开埠通商后逐渐发展成为西南地区对外贸易的重要出海口和环北部湾地区的枢纽港。然而,时至19世纪后期,随着云南蒙自和广西梧州相继开埠通商,法国租借广州湾(今广东省湛江)开辟为自由港,西南地区成为多个港口共同竞争的经济腹地,北海港的贸易地位受到严重挑战。北海港的自然条件和港口工程建设落后的缺陷使其难以发挥贸易中转港的功能,加上北海当地官民商业意识的薄弱,阻碍北海港商业贸易和基础建设的扩大发展,导致了近代北海港贸易地位的再度衰落。
Beihai, a trading port located in the southernmost coast of modern China, gradually devel- oped into an important port of foreign trade to the sea in Southwest regio.n and a pivotal port across the pan - Beibu Gulf region since it opened to foreign trade. However, with the opening of two trade ports, Mengzi in Yunnan and Wuzhou in Guangxi, France leased Kwangchowan (nowadays Zhanjiang, Guangdong prov- ince) as a free port, the Southwest region became the economic hinterland where many ports competed for, trade status of Beihai port was severely challenged until the late 19th century. The poor physical condition and port construction made Beihai difficult to function as a transit port. The weak business awareness among the local officials and folks also hindered the expansion of commercial trade and infrastructural construction. As a result, the trade status of Beihai port declined once again in the modern history of China.
