Mass customization(MC) will be the main production mode in the 21st century. The concept and characteristics of MC are defined, and its patterns categorized. Cost and delivery lead time are two great challenges for MC. The constraints of MC is analyzed and the two strategies of modularization and postponement are proposed, and on the basis of which four different production structures are presented.
