The success of the exhibition "First Generation of Chinese Architects Trained at University of Pennsylvania" held in Nanjing and Shanghai has provoked various discourses on the Beaux-Arts tradition in Chinese architectural education. When reevaluating the Beaux-Arts influence we might forget one basic fact that it was originally a fine art school. Is it only a name under which architecture is located? Or, is it substantial enough to make architecture a special kind of education? If the later is true, then how does fine art education influence architectural education? In addition, how does the discussion relate to the contemporary development of Chinese architectural education? The paper tries to answer all these questions.
