Trust is a fundamental characteristic of the doctor-patient relationship, and part of an implied contract between society and physicians. This contract calls for expectations on both sides. Patients will tell physicians their deepest personal secrets, trust them to keep that information confidential, and allow them into their homes and hospitals in times of suffering and grief. But in trade for this, physicians must uphold a code of ethics that includes caring, confidentiality, and commitment, because Trust is like a very small, but very precious gem-it can be hard to obtain, is easy to lose, and extremely difficult to regain once lost.
