Margaret Atwood' s novel Surfacing shows a postmodern world where both nature and women are oppressed. The novel contains a lot of binary opposition, such as human/nature, male/female and real- ity/fantasy, but its intention is not only to show the binary, but also to reveal gender discrimination and hierarchy within it. It also aims to call for people' s attention to the ecological crisis of human society and the predicament faced by women.
