Objective:To explore whether the application of magnesium could affect the postoperative analgesia in pediatric appendectomy. Methods: This was a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled study.Forty patients undergoing appendectomy, aged from8 to15 years, were assigned to two groups.Patients from M group received magnesium50 mg/kg before surgery, while patients from P group received 0.9% sodium chloride solution. No analgesic was applied during the operation. The postoperative pain score, sedation score, analgesic consumption and incidence rate of adverse reaction were compared between the two groups. Results:There were significant differences between the two groups regarding pain score, analgesia consumption and part of sedation score. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the adverse reactions such as respiratory depression, nausea, vomit, bradycardia and hypotension. Conclusions:Preoperative application of magnesium 50 mg/kg could significantly reduce the postoperative pain and opioids consumption for children undergoing appendectomy.Meanwhile, the incidence rates of complications such as bradycardia, hypotension, respiratory depression, nausea, vomit and skin itch would not change.
