On November 6, the World Shipping Summit 2019, co-sponsored by COSCO SHIPPING, Drewry, IHS Markit and Maritime China, was held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center(Shanghai) during the 2 nd China International Import Expo(CIIE). Known as the"Davos Forum of the shipping industry", this event attracted nearly 1,000 representatives of participants in the shipping industry chain, such as shipping, logistics, terminals, shippers, financial institutions, manufacturers, technicians and regulators from dozens of countries and regions.Revolving around the theme of "Construction and Value of World Shipping Industry Chain", more than 30 world-renowned economists shared their thoughts and judgments on the major issues facing the international shipping market, including improving service quality, absorbing excess capacity, and balancing industrial development, to seek future directions and value realization modes for the industry. Viewing from both the internal and external environments of shipping and the push of new technologies, we find deep cooperation in the industry chain representing the general trend. To build the shipping industry chain, enterprises at various links need to make changes for indepth cooperation. Currently, shipping industry chain cooperation is conducted through three basic ways: "supply-and-demand-oriented", "property-oriented" and "contract-oriented", which have their respective advantages and limitations. The industry chain operation of COSCO SHIPPING is focused on value creation for customers. Looking forward, COSCO SHIPPING will be more open to cooperate with upstream and downstream stakeholders in the shipping industry chain while taking into account corporate development and customer value to build a harmonious shipping ecosystem and forge a strategic cooperative partnership between stakeholders and customers for mutual benefit and win-win results. The world is facing "unprecedented changes". As the main carrier of world trade, shipping industry bears more than 80% of the global trade volume and is the main driving factor of economic globalization. However, it is also confronted with unprecedented impacts from internal and external factors such as protectionism, geopolitics, information technology and environmental protection. At present, it is difficult for an individual enterprise or a single industry to effectively cope with it. Industrial chain management and industrial chain cooperation have become the trend and the general trend. To this end, representatives from industry regulators, shippers, carriers, technicians and intermediaries and other sectors jointly launched the "Global Shipping Industry Chain Cooperation" initiative based on the principle of equality, voluntariness, and achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration. We hope that the initiative will be supported by all the guests attending this summit and the whole shipping industry chain, so as to jointly build a healthy shipping ecosystem and enable economic globalization.
