Sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL)results from loss of or damage to the cochlear hair cells(HCs)and spiral ganglion neurons(SGNs).It is a common form of hearing loss worldwide, affecting millions of people. At present, there are very few therapies currently available to treat SNHL.Thus, there is a need to develop new therapeutic methods to aid millions of people suffering from hearing impairment. In recent years, great progress has been made in the field of gene and stem cell research involving the auditory sensory nerve, which provides a glimmer of hope for the treatment of patients with SNHL.This paper details the current status of gene and stem cell therapy to replace lost sensory and neural cells in the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss, and describes the possible obstacles and limitations that hinder their clinical application.
