Promoting Intercultural Understanding in China’s High School ELT Class-rooms through Young Adult Literature

摘要 Language teaching involves not only developing students’linguistic performance but also promoting their intercultural competence.Within the intercultural competence framework,learners acquire skills that enable them to discover the complexity of various cultures and enhance intercultural understanding(IU).Young adult literature offers opportunities for English learners to en⁃counter cultural differences and creatively engage themselves with the diversity of the world.This paper firstly lists the worldwide calling for IU education.Then,it presents problems with IU education in English language teaching(ELT)classrooms in Chinese context.Finally,it provides a diversity of teaching approaches towards IU by means of young adult literature.
