23MnNiCrMo54 steel chain produced by a plant for mining broke when used for as little as less than one year.Besides chemical composition analysis, fracture testing of the broken chain was done by means of a scanning electron microscopy to discover the cause of its breaking. The results showed that the fracture offered high-density fatigue striations characteristic of fatigue failure, and a large amount of granular inclusions as large size as more than 300μm.From EDS analysis it was seen that the inclusions contained elements such as oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, fluorine, iron, aluminum, and titanium, being Al2O3,SiO2 and FeO which originated from slag entrapment formed during smelting and tapping. It was such inclusions that resulted in premature breaking of the chain.
