Although their origin may be shared, medicine and literature differ tremendously. From the perspective of translation, medicine and literature represent different interpretations of the body, diseases and health. This article first introduces literal translation and free translation, and demonstrates that the two modes of translation present the potential to convey the same meaning. It will then examine Xixi’s Mourning over the Breast as an example to show the difference between medical language and literary language,so to explore how translation as a significant reference would benefit medicine.Openness, diversity and dialogism as suggested in the process of translation could lay the foundations for the integration of medicine and literature.
