WeChat groups in community have become an important link for Chinese residents to meet their daily needs and enhance“government-citizen”interaction.However,academic discussion on“public online participation”in China has not yet focused on the specific context of'residents sharing information and participating in discussions through WeChat groups in the micro-field of urban and rural communities. Thus,we add the participate intention and affective commitment to the Civic Voluntarism Model(CVM)to construct a research model of dual paths at the individual and community levels.Hence,we compare the patterns of online participation behaviour between urban and rural samples. Our findings reveal that both urban and rural residents’community online participation behaviour are positively affected by personal times, interests, mobilization network, and affective community commitment, but not the community political efficacy.Meanwhile, the role of network skills and money are different between urban and rural communities. These conclusions provide a new theoretical perspective for further understanding of residents’online participation, and also provide a reference for the communities to cultivate an atmosphere of self-governance through social media.
