Based on the analysis of the existing concept of land sandification and the understanding of the phenomenon of it,this paper separates the gravelization from the land sandification, and defines the land sandification and gravelization respectively. The author puts forward a more comprehensive and neutral definition of land sandification and gravelization:land sandification is the process of increasing the proportion or amount of surface sand material, while gravelization is the process of increasing the proportion or amount of surface gravel. On this basis, the index to measure the degree and intensity of land sandification and gravelization in a region is put forward, and the logical relation of land sandification is clearly classified and expressed according to the driving force and effect of land sandification. The positive and negative effects of land sandification are discussed, and it is pointed out that wind erosion, gravel erosion, shrub removal and land sandification are all the manifestations of grassland degradation, while the aeolian desertification of moderately suitable land has a certain positive effect. At the same time, the relationship between land sandification and sand cover, grassland degradation and desertification is discussed.
