Objective This study aimed to reveal the relationship between the counseling motivation with improved mental ability and the improvement of mental health symptoms under the high-level counseling background. Methods A total of 294 students at a college counseling center participated in the study and completed the Chinese version of Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90)at the beginning and one week after counseling.Additionally, clients reported their motivation at the start of counseling and described their counseling relationships afterward.Results(1)Counseling motivation predicted the change in symptoms[F_((1,284.3))=8.25,P=0.004].Different change rates could not be well predicted by the counseling relationship[F_((1,7.00))=0.39,P=0.552].(2)There was a significant interaction between consumer motivation and counseling relationships[F_((1,228.1))=4.70,P=0.029].(3)A simple effect analysis revealed that aiming to improve the psychological aptitude of consultation moti-vation was more likely to decrease symptom severity than solving practical problems(β=-3.19,SE=1.11,t=-2.87,P=0.004).Conclusion There is a significant interaction between counseling relationships and counseling moti-vation.Psychological counseling significantly improves mental health levels, among which client motivation plays a prominent role.
