My contention in this paper is that Webster’s tragedy The Duchess of Malfi conforms to no predefined aesthetic code. The complexity of the technique of characterization, the fascination for dismembered bodies, and the use of exuberant and at times very stilted imagery, bespeak the fluidity of identity,a deep interrogation on the value of death and the co-presence of fixed and evanescent meaning. The play’s structural pivot is uncertainty as to the value of all moral and aesthetic categorizations.
