This article reveals the various developments in qualitative research from empirical to analytical traditions, by discussing three influential social-science works—The Skocpol’s States and Social Revolutions, Alexei Yurchak’s Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More, and He Wenkai’s Paths toward the Modern Fiscal State. In terms of methodology, each work can be regarded as a certain type of qualitative research. The tentative argument is that qualitative research is effective for detailed descriptions, conceptual interpretations, and searches for particular causal mechanisms, and therefore it should be more suitable for non-positive types of research. It is important to recognize the significance and contributions of both these types of research to our thinking about human social behavior.
