The concept of"yu qing"as a localized term began to take shape in the late 1990s.Initially,it was closely associated with social conditions and public sentiment. However,as the Internet and Chinese society have evolved,"yu qing"has maintained these associations while increasingly acquiring negative connotations. Moreover, the term has become intertwined with concepts like"online public opinion""online clusters""network mass incidents""network crises"and"network risks",resulting in a more complex academic landscape. This paper employs thematic analysis to examine 97 texts and explanations related to concept of"yu qing"developed over the past 20 years.Drawing on grounded theory, the concept is categorized into seven key aspects:occurrence mechanism,subject-object relationship, occurrence field, communication content, behavioral methods, essential attributes, and impact. The paper further refines the definition of"yu qing"in the context of the information age and digital communication, highlighting its emergence from specific events within the digital sphere. The concept exhibits a high degree of uncertainty across its occurrence mechanism,subject-object dynamics, field of occurrence, communication content and form,as well as its impact. It underscores the significant ambiguity surrounding its various aspects and implications.
