Rosa chinensis cvs.,is a vital emblem of traditional Chinese horticulture and serves as a significant progenitor for modern rose varieties. Its extensive cultivation throughout history underscores its immense ornamental value and unique cultural significance. As a noteworthy component of traditional Chinese culture, flower culture encapsulates the materialistic and spiritual wealth generated by the Chinese people as they engage with floral themes across various societal contexts. The essence of rose culture is rooted in the articulation of its intrinsic cultural connotations. The Chinese people, drawing upon their formidable creative capabilities and profound spiritual aspirations, have cultivated a multifaceted portrayal of flower culture, often conveyed through poetry, visual arts, and diverse artistic expressions. However, with the advent of modernity and the influx of Western cultural, the transmission of traditional Chinese floral culture, exemplified by rose culture has encountered significant challenges, leading to a superficial and monolithic interpretation of the cultural connotations of rose.In light of these challenges, promoting cultural prosperity, constructing a culturally robust nation, and fostering a modern civilization, represent cultural missions in the new era.Grounded in a respectful acknowledgment of prevailing public sentiments,it is crucial to adopt an inclusive approach that values the inheritance of traditional culture while facilitating the integration of both traditional and modern cultural paradigms. This paper delineated the development of the cultural connotations of rose into four key dimensions over time:1)Continuity and evolution of the cultural connotations of rose. The remarkable characteristics of rose, for example, its ability to bloom continuously, its resilience in harsh conditions, and its vigorous regenerative capacity, have allowed cultural expressions such as"ever blooming"and"unyielding vitality"to endure from antiquity to the present. The earliest comprehensive documentation of the perennial blooming traits of rose can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, inspired a lot of alternative names derived from this biological phenomenon.Furthermore,in the Song Dynasty, there was a burgeoning appreciation for the plant's regenerative capabilities,as exemplified by the poetic observation:"Only remembering the flowers in the courtyard,it repeatedly sprouts anew."Yu Xiuhua,a contemporary poet, continued to extol the attributes of rose in"ever blooming"and"unyielding resilience",thereby bridging the historical and modern significance of this flower.2)Gradual dilution of ancient cultural connotations. The transition across different historical periods has given rise to varying interpretations of rose culture. However, the influence of modern commercialism has gradually eroded the rich and profound expressions of"timeliness"associated with the cultural connotations of rose. This includes themes of longing for reunion, reflections on the fleeting nature of time, and the spirit embodied in the phrase"each flower possesses its own essence."Such themes encapsulate the complexity of human experience and highlight the need for a deeper appreciation of the cultural narratives associated with rose.3)Modern reinterpretations of rose culture. The transformations occurring within Chinese society, alongside the strengthening of international exchanges, have enriched the expression of the cultural connotations of rose, elevating them to new heights. This includes associations with femininity and motherhood, articulated through concepts such as"love"and"mother"as well as optimistic themes of"peace"and"prosperity".These modern reinterpretation not only reflect changing societal values but also illustrate the adaptability of rose culture as a symbol of cultural resilience.4)Socialization of the cultural connotations of rose.Throughout the evolution of rose culture, its connotations have been gradually internalized into societal values, making it a cherished spiritual anchor.Beyond textual representations, the imagery of rose is widely utilized across various practical domains, including clothing, furniture, ceramics, and other everyday items. This socialization process demonstrates how cultural symbols can transcend their original contexts and be recontextualized within contemporary society.Based on the comprehensive analysis of four dimensions of the cultural connotations of rose, this study seeks to explore new pathways for the advancement of rose culture in the contemporary context. The primary objective is to provide significant insights for the protection, inheritance, and innovative development of traditional Chinese floral culture.By leveraging culture as a vehicle, this paper proposed to establish a flower industry and cultural system with Chinese characteristics:1)Exploration and preservation of the cultural connotations of roses. It involves developing a flower industry that reflects national characteristics, fostering a synergistic relationship between economic growth and cultural enrichment.Such an approach would not only celebrate the beauty of rose but also promote sustainable practices in floral cultivation.2)Innovation in cultural communication models.Effectively narrating the stories of Chinese flowers through contemporary communication strategies is essential.By leveraging modern technology and platforms, these narratives can reach broader audiences, fostering a greater appreciation for the cultural significance of Rosa.3)Exploration of multicultural integration.Developing new synergies between rose culture and other esteemed elements of traditional Chinese culture is crucial for enriching cultural dialogue. This integration can foster a more nuanced understanding of how rose interacts with various cultural narratives, promoting a holistic view of Chinese heritage. In conclusion,we should construct a socialist society with Chinese characteristics in the new era.The protection, inheritance, and development of flower culture imbued with distinctively Chinese traits hold significant importance for industrial advancement and the promotion of spiritual civilization. It not only addresses the challenges posed by modernity but also serves as a critical direction for ongoing efforts and progress in the cultural landscape of contemporary China.Through these initiatives, rose can continue to flourish as a symbol of both cultural heritage and contemporary relevance, ensuring its place in the hearts and minds of future generations.
