This study investigates the three-dimensional(3D)effects introduced by the end walls for an aspect ratio of1 in ramp-induced shock wave boundary layer interactions. The simulations are performed using a symmetry boundary condition in the spanwise direction at free-stream Mach numbers in 3D.The simulations are performed using an in-house compressible supersonic solver“Open SBLIFVM”.Two free stream Mach numbers 2.5,and3 are used in the current work, and the simulated results are compared with the aspect ratio 1 simulations by Mangalagiri and Jammy. The inflow is initialized with a similarity solution;its Reynolds number based on the boundary layer thickness is adjusted such that the Reynolds number at the start of the ramp is kept at 3×10^(5)for all simulations. From the results,it is evident that the introduction of sidewalls resulted in a shorter centerline separation length when compared with the two-dimensional(2D)simulations.This contradicts the results at Mach 2 by Mangalgiri and Jammy where the vortex observed at Mach 2 in the central separation region disappeared with increasing free-stream Mach number.Additionally, the topology of interaction shifted from owl-like separation of the second kind to the first kind when the freestream Mach number increased from2 to 2.5.It can be concluded that the interaction topology is crucial to the increase or decrease of the central separation length when compared to 2D simulations. 展开更多

A two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver is applied to analyze the aerodynamic behavior of the Shock/Boundary-Layer interaction of rocket with a boosted The K-ε turbulence model and a finite volume method in a unstructured body-fitted curvilinear coordinates have been used. The results indicate that the separation and the reattachment occur in the Boundary-Layer of the main rocket because of the shock interaction. The shape of the booster nose effects the flow field obviously. In the case of the hemisphere booster nose the pressure has complicate distributions and the separation is very clear. The distance between the booster and main rocket has the evident effect on the flow field. If the distance is smaller the pressure coefficient is bigger the separation zone even the separation bubble occurs. 展开更多

Shock formation due to flow compressibility and its interaction with boundary layers has adverse effects on aerodynamic characteristics, such as drag increase and flow separation. The objective of this paper is to appraise the practicability of weakening shock waves and, hence, reducing the wave drag in transonic flight regime using a two-dimensional jagged wall and thereby to gain an appropriate jagged wall shape for future empirical study. Different shapes of the jagged wall, including rectangular, circular, and triangular shapes, were employed. The numerical method was validated by experimental and numerical studies involving transonic flow over the NACA0012 airfoil, and the results presented here closely match previous experimental and numerical results. The impact of parameters, including shape and the length-to-spacing ratio of a jagged wall, was studied on aerodynamic forces and flow field. The results revealed that applying a jagged wall method on the upper surface of an airfoil changes the shock structure significantly and disintegrates it, which in turn leads to a decrease in wave drag. It was also found that the maximum drag coefficient decrease of around 17 % occurs with a triangular shape, while the maximum increase in aerodynamic efficiency(lift-to-drag ratio)of around 10 % happens with a rectangular shape at an angle of attack of 2.26?. 展开更多

The reason for the asymmetry phenomenon of shock/boundary layer interactions(SBLI)in a completely symmetric nozzle with symmetric flow conditions is still an open question.A model for the asymmetry of nozzle flows was proposed based on the properties of fluid entrainment in the mixing layer and momentum conservation. The asymmetry model is deduced based on the nozzle flow with restricted shock separation, and is still applicable for free shock separation.Flow deflection angle at nozzle exit is deduced from this model.Steady numerical simulations are conducted to model the asymmetry of the SBLIs in a planar convergent-divergent nozzle tested by previous researchers. The obtained values of deflection angle based on the numerical results of forced symmetric nozzle flows can judge the asymmetry of flows in a nozzle at some operations. It shows that the entrainment of shear layer on the separation induced by SBLTs is one of the reasons for the asymmetry in the confined SBLIs. 展开更多

A novel third-order optimized symmetric weighted essentially non-oscillatory(WENO-OS3)scheme is used to simulate the hypersonic shock wave/boundary layer interactions.Firstly, the scheme is presented with the achievement of low dissipation in smooth region and robust shock-capturing capabilities in discontinuities. The Maxwell slip boundary conditions are employed to consider the rarefied effect near the surface.Secondly, several validating tests are given to show the good resolution of the WENO-OS3 scheme and the feasibility of the Maxwell slip boundary conditions. Finally, hypersonic flows around the hollow cylinder truncated flare(HCTF)and the25°/55°sharp double cone are studied.Discussions are made on the characteristics of the hypersonic shock wave/boundary layer interactions with and without the consideration of the slip effect. The results indicate that the scheme has a good capability in predicting heat transfer with a high resolution for describing fluid structures. With the slip boundary conditions, the separation region at the corner is smaller and the prediction is more accurate than that with no-slip boundary conditions. 展开更多

This paper presents briefly the recent progress on study of swept shock wave/boundary layer interactions with emphasis on application of zonal analysis and correlation analysis to them. Based on the zonal analysis an overall framework of complicated interaction flow structure including both surface flowfield and space flowfield is discussed. Based on correlation analysis the conical interactions induced by four families of shock wave generators have been discussed in detail. Some control parameter and physical mechanism of conical interaction have been revealed. Finally some aspects of the problem and the prospects for future work are suggested. 展开更多

Experiments are conducted in a Mach 3 in-draft air tunnel. The separation-inducing shock is generated with a diamond-shaped shockwave generator located on the wall opposite to the surface electrodes, and the flow properties are studied with schlieren imaging and static wall pressure probes. The measurements show that the separation phenomenon is weakened with the plasma aerodynamic actuation, which is observed to have significant control authority over the inter- action. The main effect is the displacement of the reflected shock. Perturbations of incident and reflected oblique shocks interacting with the separation bubble in a rectangular cross section supersonic test section are produced by the plasma actuation. This interaction results in a reduction of the separation bubble size, as detected by phase-lock schlieren images. The measured static wall pressure also shows that the separation-inducing shock is restrained. Our results suggest that the boundary layer separation control through heating is the primary control mechanism. 展开更多

A direct numerical simulation (DNS) on an oblique shock wave with an incident angle of 33.2° impinging on a Mach 2.25 supersonic turbulent boundary layer is performed. The numerical results are confirmed to be of high accuracy by comparison with the reference data. Particular efforts have been made on the investigation of the near-wall behaviors in the interaction region, where the pressure gradient is so significant that a certain separation zone emerges. It is found that, the traditional linear and loga- rithmic laws, which describe the mean-velocity profiles in the viscous and meso sublayers, respectively, cease to be valid in the neighborhood of the interaction region, and two new laws of the wall are proposed by elevating the pressure gradient to the leading order. The new laws are inspired by the analysis on the incompressible separation flows, while the compressibility is additionally taken into account. It is verified by the DNS results that the new laws are adequate to reproduce the mean-velocity profiles both inside and outside the interaction region. Moreover, the normalization adopted in the new laws is able to regularize the Reynolds stress into an almost universal distribution even with a salient adverse pressure gradient (APG). 展开更多

This paper reports theoretical and experimental study of a new type of interaction of a moving shock wave with an unsteady boundary layer. This type of shock wave-boundary layer interaction describes a moving shock wave interaction with an unsteady boundary layer induced by another shock wave and a rarefaction wave. So it is different from the interaction of a stationary shock wave with steady boundary layer, also different from the interaction of a reflected moving shock wave at the end of a shock tube with unsteady boundary layer induced by an incident shock. Geometrical shock dynamics is used for the theoretical analysis of the shock wave-unsteady boundary layer interaction, and a double-driver shock tube with a rarefaction wave bursting diaphragm is used for the experimental investigation in this work. 展开更多

The influence of a nontotal reflection on the interaction of a reflected shock wave with the boundary layer in a reflected shock tunnel has been investigated. The calculating method of the velocity, the temperature and the Mach number profiles in the boundary layer in reflected shock fixed coordinates has been obtained. To account for equilibrium real gas effects of nitrogen, the numerical results show that the minimum Mach number in the boundary layer has been moved from the wall into the boundary layer with the increasing of the incident shock Mach number. The minimum Mach number, the shock angle in the bifurcated foot and the jet velocity along the wall to the end plate are reduced owing to the Increasing of the area of nozzle throat. The numerical results are in good agreement with measurements. 展开更多

An experimental study was conducted on shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions caused by a blunt swept fin-plate configuration at Mach numbers of 5.0, 7.8, 9.9 for a Reynolds number range of (1.0.similar to 4.7) x 10(7)/m. Detailed heat transfer and pressure distributions were measured at fin deflection angles of up to 30 degrees for a sweepback angle of 67.6 degrees. Surface oil flow patterns and liquid crystal thermograms as well as schlieren pictures of fin shock shape were taken. The study shows that the flow was separated at deflection of 10 degrees and secondary separation were detected at deflection of theta greater than or equal to 20 degrees. The heat transfer and pressure distributions on flat plate showed an extensive plateau region followed by a distinct dip and local peak close to the fin foot. Measurements of the plateau pressure and heat transfer were in good agreement with existing prediction methods, but pressure and heating peak measurements at M greater than or equal to 6 were significantly lower than predicted by the simple prediction techniques at lower Mach numbers. 展开更多

The Beijing 325 m meteorological tower stands as a pivotal research platform for exploring atmospheric boundary layer physics and atmospheric chemistry. With a legacy spanning 45 years, the tower has played a crucial role in unraveling the complexities of urban air pollution, atmospheric processes, and climate change in Beijing,China. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the measurements on the tower over the past two decades.Through long-term comprehensive observations, researchers have elucidated the intricate relationships between anthropogenic emissions, meteorological dynamics, and atmospheric composition, shedding light on the drivers of air pollution and its impacts on public health. The vertical measurements on the tower also enable detailed investigations into boundary layer dynamics, turbulent mixing, and pollutant dispersion, providing invaluable data for validating chemical transport models.Key findings from the tower’s research include the identification of positive feedback mechanisms between aerosols and the boundary layer, the characterization of pollutant sources and transport pathways, the determination of fluxes of gaseous and particulate species, and the assessment of the effectiveness of pollution control measures.Additionally, isotopic measurements have provided new insights into the sources and formation processes of particulate matter and reactive nitrogen species. Finally, the paper outlines future directions for tower-based research, emphasizing the need for long-term comprehensive measurements, the development of innovative tower platforms, and integration of emerging technologies. 展开更多

The objective of receptivity is to investigate the mechanisms by which external disturbances generate unsta- ble waves. In hypersonic boundary layers, a new receptivity process is revealed, which is that fast and slow acoustics through nonlinear interaction can excite the second mode near the lower-branch of the second mode. They can generate a sum-frequency disturbance though nonlinear interaction, which can excite the second mode. This receptivity process is generated by the nonlinear interaction and the nonparal- lel nature of the boundary layer. The receptivity coefficient is sensitive to the wavenumber difference between the sumfrequency disturbance and the lower-branch second mode. When the wavenumber difference is zero, the receptivity coefficient is maximum. The receptivity coefficient decreases with the increase of the wavenumber difference. It is also found that the evolution of the sum-frequency disturbance grows linearly in the beginning. It indicates that the forced term generated by the sum-frequency disturbance resonates with the second mode. 展开更多

Using the idea of general resonant triad of the hydrodynamic stability, the theoretical models for coherent structures in the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer is proposed. The interaction between coherent structures in the wall region of a turbulent boundary layer is studied by combining the compact finite differences of high numerical accuracy and the Fourier spectral hybrid method for solving the three dimensional Navier Stokes equations. In this method, the third order mixed explicit implicit scheme is employed for the time integration. The fifth order upwind compact finite difference schemes for the nonlinear convection terms in the physical space, and the sixth order center compact schemes for the derivatives in spectral space are descried, respectively. The fourth order compact schemes satisfied by the velocities and pressure in spectral space is derived. As an application, the method is implemented to the wall region of a turbulent boundary to study the interaction between coherent structures. It is found that the numerical results are satisfactory. 展开更多

A modified form of the Townsend equations for the fluctuating velocity wave vectors is applied to the interaction of a longitudinal vortex with a laminar boundary-layer flow. These three-dimensional equations are cast into a Lorenz-format system of equations for the spectral velocity component solutions. Tsallis-form empirical entropic indices are obtained from the solutions of the modified Lorenz equations. These solutions are sensitive to the initial conditions applied to the time-dependent coupled, non-linear differential equations for the spectral velocity components. Eighteen sets of initial conditions for these solutions are examined. The empirical entropic indices yield corresponding intermittency exponents which then yield the entropy generation rates for each set of initial conditions. The flow environment consists of the flow of hydrogen gas with impurities at a given temperature and pressure in the interaction of a longitudinal vortex with a laminar boundary layer flow. Results are presented that indicate a strong correlation of predicted entropy generation rates and the corresponding applied initial conditions. These initial conditions may be ascribed to the turbulence levels in the boundary layer, thus indicating a source for the subsequent entropy generation rates by the interactive instabilities. 展开更多

Cowl-induced incident Shock Wave/Boundary Layer Interactions (SWBLI) under the influence of gradual expansion waves are frequently observed in supersonic inlets. However, the analysis and prediction of interaction lengths have not been sufficiently investigated. First, this study presents a theoretical scaling analysis and validates it through wind tunnel experiments. It conducts detailed control volume analysis of mass conservation, considering the differences between inviscid and viscous cases. Then, three models for analysing interaction length under gradual expansion waves are derived. Related experiments using schlieren photography are conducted to validate the models in a Mach 2.73 flow. The interaction scales are captured at various relative distances between the shock impingement location and the expansion regions with wedge angles ranging from 12° to 15° and expansion angles of 9°, 12°, and 15°. Three trend lines are plotted based on different expansion angles to depict the relationship between normalised interaction length and normalised interaction strength metric. In addition, the relationship between the coefficients of the trend line and the expansion angles is introduced to predict the interaction length influenced by gradual expansion waves. Finally, the estimation of normalised interaction length is derived for various coefficients within a unified form. 展开更多

The dynamic soil-tunnel interaction is studied by the model of a rigid tunnel embedded in layered half-space, which is simplified as a single soil layer on elastic bedrock to the excitation of P- and SV-waves. The indirect boundary element method is used, combined with the Green' s function of distributed loads acting on inclined lines. It is shown that the dynamic characteristics of soil-tunnel interaction in layered half-space are different much from that in homoge- neous half-space, and that the mechanism of soil-tunnel interaction is also different much from that of soil-founda- tion-superstructure interaction.
