As a typical tonal language, the Chinese language is capable of distinguishing different lexical meanings by its tonal changes. For non-native Chinese learners, mastering Chinese tones is a great challenge. In recent years, academics have begun to focus on the following question: how do second language learners acquire Mandarin tones when learning Chinese. In this paper, we take the journal articles on “Chinese Tone Acquisition” in the Web of Science (WOS) database as a sample and conduct an in-depth bibliometric analysis using CiteSpace visualization software. The study reveals that scholars and research institutions in this field are mainly concentrated in the United States, Australia and Hong Kong SAR, China, and the main research disciplines are education, psychology and neuroscience. The research hotspots cover second language vocabulary learning and auditory category learning as the research contents of second language phonological learning, as well as hypothalamus and cortical striatal system as the brain basis of Chinese tone acquisition. This field has a wide scope for future research in terms of content, perspective and methodology.展开更多

Therefore, in-depth research on L2 motivation not only helps teachers to better understand students’ learning needs and mental states, so as to formulate more targeted teaching strategies, but also helps learners to better understand themselves, so as to adopt more effective learning methods and improve learning efficiency. In general, it has gone through the following four periods, including the socio-psychological period, the cognitive-situated period, the process-oriented process and the social-dynamic period. Following this sequence, this review introduces the main theories during each period and reflects the existing problems in this field.展开更多

Within this field, motivation and emotion play crucial roles in both initiating and sustaining the language learning process. This paper reviews the role of motivation in second language learning, tracing the development of motivation research from social psychology, and cognitive theories, to dynamic process models. Additionally, it explores the impact of emotion on second language learning, focusing on the roles of positive and negative emotions in influencing motivation and learning outcomes. By summarizing relevant theories and empirical research, this paper offers a comprehensive view of the interaction between motivation and emotion and discusses potential future research directions, aiming to provide more effective strategies for optimizing language learning.展开更多
