The effects of pH value and temperature on toxicity of ammonia nitrogen to anaerobes were investigated. The results show that the specific methanogenic activity of anaerobic granular sludge suffers inhibition from ammonia nitrogen, the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen that produce 50 % inhibition of specific methanogenic activity for sludge from UASB and EGSB reactor are 2.35 and 2.75 g/L, respectively. Hydrogen utilizing methanogens suffers less inhibition from ammonia mtrogen than that of acetate utilizing methanogens. Hydrogen-producing acetogens that utilize propionate and butyrate as substrates suffer serious inhibition from ammonia nitrogen. The toxicity of ammonia nitrogen to anaerobic granular sludge enhances when pH value and temperature increase. Anaerobic granular sludge can bear higher concentrations of ammonia nitrogen after being acclimated by ammonia nitrogen for 7 d.展开更多

This paper describes the experience of a biological waste water treatment plant (WWTP) processing a COD concentration of 43000 mg·L^-1 wastewater from an oxochemical manufacturing plant. Stage improvements of the plant process by dilution of the inhibitory influent using other chemical wastewater streams resulting in a synergistic process effect, and removal of inhibitory organics by phase separation via acidification, effectively achieved process optimization producing a high quality effluent. In particular, the COD removal efficiency of granular sludge based anaerobic reactors increased from 56% to 90%. The final effluent COD decreased from 250mg·L^-1 to 50mg·L^-1, consistently meeting the COD concentration of 100 mg·L^-1 regulatory discharge limit. The success of the process enhancements supports the hypothesis that long-chain quaternary carboxylic acids act as substrate inhibitors in the biological process.展开更多

The result shows that there are different inhibition types at differ-ent lead contents. Higher lead content leads to more inhibition granular sludge, and at the same time, the time of gas recovery is different. Lower lead content per microorganism results in sooner sludge recovery. Microorganisms have a good ability to resist lead toxicity.展开更多

Continuous flow was used to treat synthetic wastewater containing dextrose and beer, and the temperature of reactor was controlled at mesophiles temperature (33 ℃). The experimental results demonstrated that the proper sludge loading rate was 0.9-1.42 kg COD/(kg VSS·d); the pH value in the reactor was controlled by adding sodium bicarbonate, the proper additive quantity was 1000-1200 mg/L; the additive quantity of nutrient element was as follows: 41.3 mg/(SS·d) of FeCl2·4H2O, 4.3 mg/(SS·d) of CoCl2·6H2O, 8.2 mg/(SS·d) of NiCl2·6H2O, 7.5-13 mg/(SS·d) of CaCO3,and 56.7-22.7 mg/(SS·d) of 7Na2S·9H2O, respectively. When these parameters were properly determined, the EGSB reactor could treat wastewater with 400-5000 mg/L COD concentration. The COD removal efficiency was over 85%. The operation of the EGSB reactor was steady and the EGSB reactor had strong anti-shock load ability.展开更多
