While providing unprecedented capabilities to co...Peta-scale high-perfomlance computing systems are increasingly built with heterogeneous CPU and GPU nodes to achieve higher power efficiency and computation throughput. While providing unprecedented capabilities to conduct computational experiments of historic significance, these systems are presently difficult to program. The users, who are domain experts rather than computer experts, prefer to use programming models closer to their domains (e.g., physics and biology) rather than MPI and OpenME This has led the development of domain-specific programming that provides domain-specific programming interfaces but abstracts away some performance-critical architecture details. Based on experience in designing large-scale computing systems, a hybrid programming framework for scientific computing on heterogeneous architectures is proposed in this work. Its design philosophy is to provide a collaborative mechanism for domain experts and computer experts so that both domain-specific knowledge and performance-critical architecture details can be adequately exploited. Two real-world scientific applications have been evaluated on TH-IA, a peta-scale CPU-GPU heterogeneous system that is currently the 5th fastest supercomputer in the world. The experimental results show that the proposed framework is well suited for developing large-scale scientific computing applications on peta-scale heterogeneous CPU/GPU systems.展开更多

Numerical simulation in the frequency-space domain has inherent advantages, such as: it is possible to simulate wave propagation from multiple sources simultaneously; there are no cumulative errors; only the interest...Numerical simulation in the frequency-space domain has inherent advantages, such as: it is possible to simulate wave propagation from multiple sources simultaneously; there are no cumulative errors; only the interesting frequencies can be selected; and it is more suitable for wave propagation in viscoelastic media. The only obstacle to using the method is the requirement of huge computer storage. We extend the compressed format for storing the coefficient matrix. It can reduce the required computer storage dramatically. We get the optimal coefficients by least-squares method to suppress the numerical dispersion and adopt the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary conditions to eliminate the artificial boundary reflections. Using larger grid intervals decreases computer storage requirements and provides high computational efficiency. Numerical experiments demonstrate that these means are economic and effective, providing a good basis for elastic wave imaging and inversion.展开更多

The neural network inversion method has been studied as one of the neural network-based solutions. On the other hand, the extension of the neural network to a higher-dimensional domain, e.g., complex-value or quaternion, has been proposed, and a number of higher-dimensional neural network models have been proposed. Using the quatemion, we have the advantage of expressing 3D (three-dimensional) object attitudes easily. In the quaternion domain, we can define inverse problems where the cause and the result are expressed by the quaternion. In this paper, we extend the neural network inversion method to the quatemion domain. Further, we provide the results of the computer experiments to demonstrate the process and effectiveness of our method.展开更多

The two-phase zone is represented as a porous medium with variable porosity. The additional force resisting the melt flow due to porosity and introduced by analogy with Darcy's law is taken into account. Computer simulation has been performed of the experiment on Sn-20 wt.%Pb binary alloy solidification by the method of downward-directed crystallization along the gravity vector. The paper shows the results of a quasi two-dimensional benchmark experiment on horizontal (i.e., at the right angle to the gravity vector) directional solidification of a binary Sn-3 wt.%Pb alloy. The calculations were done using two crystallization models: the equilibrium model and the non-equilibrium one. It is shown that the non-equilibrium model gives a better description of the thermal field evolution and solute distribution caused by natural convection.展开更多

Limited efficiency and accuracy are disadvantages to the deterministic lo...Wireless local area networks (WLAN) localization based on received signal strength is becoming an important enabler of location based services. Limited efficiency and accuracy are disadvantages to the deterministic location estimation techniques. The probabilistic techniques show their good accuracy but cost more computation overhead. A Gaussian mixture model based on clustering technique was presented to improve location determination efficiency. The proposed clustering algorithm reduces the number of candidate locations from the whole area to a cluster. Within a cluster, an improved nearest neighbor algorithm was used to estimate user location using signal strength from more access points. Experiments show that the location estimation time is greatly decreased while high accuracy can still be achieved.展开更多

Based on the fact that the boundary of practical dynamic security region(PDSR) of a power system with double fed induction generators(DFIG) can be approximated by one or few hyper-planes in nodal power injection space, transient stability criterion for given configurations of pre-fault, fault-on and post-fault of a power system is to be expressed by certain expressions of linear combination of nodal injection vector and the transient stability probability(TSP) is further obtained with a much more simplified expression than the complex integral. Furthermore, considering uncertainties of nodal injection power including wind power and load, TSP is calculated analytically by Cornish-Fisher expansion, which can provide reliable evaluation results with high accuracy and much less computing time compared with Monte Carlo simulation. TSP and its visualization can further help operators and planners be aware of the degree of stability or instability and find critical components to monitor and reinforce. Test results on the New England 10-generators and 39-buses power system show the method's effectiveness and significance for probabilistic security assessment.展开更多
